Flavored butter, aka compound butter, is an amazing condiment. It’s one of the best ways to add great flavor to any meal, including steak, pork, chicken, fish, seafood, roasted vegetables and even pancakes. It takes just a few minutes to prepare and will last for several months if frozen. The basic ingredient is butter mixed with herbs, spices, or other ingredients such as cheese, nuts or even berries. If you can’t eat butter, swap it with lard, duck fat and even virgin coconut oil.
1. Garlic & Herb Flavored Butter
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, crushed
- 2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley or 2 tsp dried parsley

Method
Make sure all the ingredients have reached room temperature before mixing them. In a medium bowl, mix the softened butter and your preferred spices, herbs and other ingredients. Spoon the butter on a piece of parchment paper. Wrap and roll to create a log shape. Twist the ends of the paper in the opposite direction to seal. Store the butter in the fridge for up to a week or freeze for up to 6 months. If you decide to freeze it, it helps if you slice it into as many servings as needed. Alternatively, spoon the flavored butter into an ice tray and refrigerate – it’s perfect for portion control!
